What is the OIST Research Internship?
The OIST Research Internship Program consists of short-term placements that provide students with experience working in a research environment directed by OIST faculty. Interns contribute to OIST’s research activities by working under the guidance of a Professor. These internships typically last between 3 to 6 months.

Who Can Apply? Application Requirements
- Students currently enrolled in their last two years of a bachelor’s degree.
- Students currently enrolled in any year of a master’s degree.
- Graduates who have completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
- Currently enrolled students must have approval from their home institution.
- Applicants’ academic backgrounds should be appropriate to their desired host unit(s) at OIST.
- The program is designed for those who need more research experience and are interested in joining OIST’s PhD Program later.
- Current or graduated PhD students are not eligible to apply for this program; they should seek other opportunities such as workshops or careers at OIST.

Required Documents for Application
Applications are accepted entirely online. You must create an account to apply. It is important to prepare all required documents in English, save them as PDF files, and upload them to the application website.
- Transcript and Diploma: Scanned copies of your current academic transcript and any other transcripts from your past degrees (BSc, MSc, etc.), along with completed diplomas (BSc, MSc, etc.) in PDF format. Unofficial transcripts are also accepted. English explanation is required for transcripts not written in English. If you haven’t graduated, upload a certificate of enrollment indicating your expected graduation date.
- Statement of Purpose: This should be no more than 400 words (2500 characters). It should explain how OIST and your desired research unit(s) fit your expertise and skillset, what you hope to achieve at OIST, and how the internship aligns with your overall career plans.
- Recommendation Letter: At least one, and no more than three, recommendation letters are required from professorial-level faculty who know you and your work personally. Letters from lab members or postdoctoral researchers are not eligible. If from industry, they must be from a supervising manager. Your application can only be submitted after at least one recommendation letter has been received by the application system. Recommenders receive an automatic message from OIST and must follow instructions in the email; letters submitted directly by applicants are not accepted. The deadline for recommenders to submit letters is the same as the application deadline.
- Passport: You need to provide your passport number and upload a scanned copy of your passport’s photo page. If you don’t have a passport, you can upload other government-issued identification documents, but a valid passport will be needed if selected.
- ID Photo: A recent photo (taken within the last three months) showing your face from the front in standard passport orientation.
Optional Documents:
• English Proficiency Score: An English Proficiency Score (IELTS/TOEFL) is not required for the Research Internship application. However, you may upload it if you believe it will strengthen your application.
Application Timeline and Deadlines
Research Intern positions are awarded twice a year on a competitive basis.
• Spring 2026 Internship:
◦ Application Deadline: October 15th, 2025, 23:59 (JST UTC+9)
◦ Result Announcement: Late December 2025
◦ Internship Period: Between April 1st, 2026 – September 30th, 2026
• Fall 2026 Internship:
◦ Application Deadline: April 15th, 2026, 23:59 (JST UTC+9)
◦ Result Announcement: Late June 2026
◦ Internship Period: Between October 1st, 2026 – March 31st, 2027
Please note that these dates are tentative and subject to change. The internship duration can be a minimum of 3 months to a maximum of 6 months within one Period of Internship.
