  10. Summary: For serious Japanese language study in Osaka, go to the ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages!

1. What is ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages? Basic School Information

First, let’s look at the basic information, including location, to understand what kind of school ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages is.

Excellent Access! Prime Location in Osaka’s Umeda Area

One of the attractions of ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages is its excellent accessibility for daily commuting. The school is centrally located in Osaka’s Umeda area, a major city in the Kansai region, with a six-story campus building situated in a very accessible location—approximately 10 minutes on foot from JR Osaka Station, western Japan’s largest terminal station. With Umeda as your base, traveling to popular tourist destinations such as Kyoto, Kobe, and Nara is extremely smooth, so you won’t lack for weekend activities.

Furthermore, “Nakazakicho,” where the school is located, is an attractive neighborhood extremely popular with young people, filled with cute cafes, retro yet modern vintage clothing stores, and general goods shops. You can enjoy Japanese conversation practice at cafes with your multinational classmates after class or go shopping at nearby commercial facilities—the perfect environment for a fulfilling student life. It’s a blessed location where even your daily commute becomes enjoyable.

A Global Environment Where International Students from 42 Countries and Japanese Students Come Together

The “Yamaguchi Gakuen Educational Foundation,” to which ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages belongs, is an educational institution with a history spanning over 40 years since its founding, boasting tradition and proven results in Osaka.

One of the school’s greatest attractions is its overwhelming scale and global environment where diverse cultures intersect. On campus, approximately 1,100 international students from 42 countries worldwide and approximately 2,280 Japanese students studying at vocational schools within the same educational foundation are enrolled together.

A Japanese language school where such a large-scale and multinational student body gathers under one roof is extremely rare even nationwide. Beyond simply learning Japanese grammar and vocabulary in the classroom, you can compete with classmates of different nationalities and interact daily with Japanese students of the same generation who pass through campus. While in Japan, you can naturally cultivate a “global mindset” that respects diverse cultures and values from around the world—truly an ideal learning environment.

Additionally, from April 2027, the school plans to start a new curriculum as a “Certified Japanese Language Education Institution” (application pending), further enhancing the quality of education.

Many Internal Transfers to Three Adjacent Vocational Schools

For international students who acquire solid Japanese language skills at ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages and wish to further study specialized skills in Japan, a very advantageous option called “internal transfer” within the Yamaguchi Gakuen Educational Foundation is available.

Transfer destinations include “ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages (Specialized Curriculum)” for studying languages, business, hotels, and trade; “ECC College of Computer & Multimedia” for studying IT, games, 3DCG, and web; and “ECC College of Beauty & Style” for honing skills in hairdressing, makeup, and nails—three schools to choose from.

The greatest advantage of this internal transfer system is that “full entrance fee exemption” and “tuition exemption system” are provided as significant financial support for internal transfer students. Since you can acquire cutting-edge specialized skills while keeping costs down in the familiar campus environment, an incredibly attractive and reassuring learning environment is in place for international students aiming for future employment in Japan’s IT/game industry, beauty industry, business/tourism industry, and more.

2. Build Real Skills! Six Features That Significantly Improve Japanese Language Ability

When it comes to studying abroad in Japan or Japanese language learning, what concerns you most is probably “Why should I choose ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages from among the many Japanese language schools?”

The answer lies in the school’s “unique educational methods and learning environment that reliably improve Japanese language ability,” cultivated through years of expertise. Here, we’ll explain in detail the “six features” highly valued by international students from around the world.

Feature ① Overwhelming Study Hours and Comprehensive Support Through Homeroom System

Securing sufficient study time is essential for language acquisition. While Japan’s Immigration Services Agency sets the standard for general Japanese language educational institutions at “760 class hours or more” per year, ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages secures an overwhelming 860 class hours per year, far exceeding that standard (*1 class hour = 45 minutes). This abundant learning volume makes it possible to thoroughly polish your “Japanese language ability” from basics to applications.

Another major attraction is the adoption of a “homeroom system” that supports each international student individually. Homeroom teachers not only provide academic guidance but also kindly listen to concerns and consultations about daily life in unfamiliar Japan. Sometimes strict, sometimes gentle, they support students like a “Japanese family” in tandem until graduation, creating an environment where you can concentrate on learning with peace of mind even during your first experience living in Japan.

Feature ② Level-Based Class Organization Aligned with International Standards (CEFR)

Class organization at ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages follows a nine-level system aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) (A1–C1). Since you’re placed in a class matching your level through a placement test upon enrollment, there’s no worry about classes being “too easy and boring” or “too difficult to follow.”

What’s particularly distinctive is the school’s unique “three-month learning cycle.”

  1. Learning: Acquire “practical Japanese” suited to various scenes and situations using the textbook “Dekiru Nihongo”
  2. Practice: Apply what you’ve learned through actual activities such as shopping at stores, class parties, and exchanges with Japanese guests
  3. Check: Confirm achievement level through regular tests (grammar, reading, writing) and conversation tests (one-on-one dialogue with teachers)

By repeating this cycle every three months and continuing until graduation, you can steadily level up while overcoming weak areas. This active learning-style teaching approach that emphasizes “enjoying while using” cultivates confidence and ability in many international students.

Feature ③ Learn Living Japanese! “Buddy Program” and Japanese Cultural Experiences

No matter how much you study in class, your ability won’t develop without opportunities to actually use Japanese. At ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages, abundant opportunities are provided to apply the Japanese you’ve learned in real life.

The “Buddy Program” is an international exchange program where approximately 2,280 Japanese students from Yamaguchi Gakuen and international students interact in small groups twice a week. While enjoying origami and games, Japanese conversation naturally emerges, and realizations accumulate like “This expression I learned in class—this is how it’s used in this situation!” Many students report that friendships formed here led to outings to Universal Studios Japan and daily communication.

Additionally, through Japanese cultural experience events (New Year’s calligraphy, tea ceremony, flower arrangement, yukata dressing, Japanese sweets making, etc.), you can physically experience the uniquely Japanese aesthetic sense and values behind the language. Cultural understanding of “why Japanese people use such expressions” deepens, making your Japanese language ability even richer.

Feature ④ Community Engagement Activities That Develop Human Skills Through Regional Exchange

At ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages, “service learning and community contribution activities” that give back to society the knowledge and Japanese language skills acquired in class are also actively implemented.

Major events students participate in include the “Nakazakicho Candle Night” created with local residents, the “Omotenashi Squad” at “OSAKA Hikari no Renaissance,” a winter tradition in Osaka, operational staff for the “Osaka Castle Triathlon International Competition,” the “Honjo Mochi-tsuki Taikai,” and “town guidance for foreign and Japanese tourists” in Umeda.

These activities involving direct communication with local people provide real Japanese language experience unavailable in the classroom, while also serving as valuable opportunities to develop “human skills” such as cooperation, responsibility, and a spirit of challenge.

Feature ⑤ Abundant Opportunities for Presenting Results, Including Speech Contests

At ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages, multiple opportunities are provided to demonstrate daily learning achievements.

  • Speech Contest: Once a year, representatives from each class give Japanese speeches on themes they want to convey. A unified occasion where entire classes support their representatives.
  • Global Education Awards (GEA): A presentation competition for all Yamaguchi Gakuen students. Present your experiences and thoughts in Japanese on the theme of contributing to global society.
  • Oratorical Contest: Held annually for the purpose of scholarships for foreign students and enrichment of Japanese language education. ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages students have won excellence awards at national competitions.

Through these occasions, “the ability to communicate in Japanese,” “the ability to organize logically,” and “the ability to speak confidently in front of people” are polished, deepening students’ confidence in Japanese.

Feature ⑶ Full Support for Advancement and Employment! Comprehensive Guidance and JLPT/EJU Preparation

A major strength is not only polishing Japanese language skills but also providing comprehensive support to achieve “advancement and employment” goals.

For those hoping to advance, one-on-one guidance by faculty and staged advancement guidance (choosing a major, statement of purpose, interview preparation, etc.) from May to September are provided. For those hoping for employment, résumé correction, manner training, and interview preparation are covered through employment guidance and individual consultations to support job offers in desired industries and occupations.

Additionally, preparation for JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) “N1–N3” and EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission) is available on-demand or in-person. Consistent support is provided from Japanese language acquisition to career realization.

3. Course Introduction by Objective (Long-term and Short-term Programs)

At ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages, multiple courses (long-term and short-term) are available to flexibly match each international student’s goals. Here, let’s look in detail at which goals each course suits.

“Advancement Program” for Those Aiming for Japanese Universities and Vocational Schools

The “Advancement Program” is a course specialized for international students aiming to advance to higher education institutions such as Japanese universities, graduate schools, and vocational schools. Depending on enrollment timing, you can choose from two periods: 1 year and 6 months (October enrollment) or 2 years (April enrollment).

The greatest feature of this course is that you can thoroughly learn advanced “academic Japanese” directly connected to learning at your advancement destination. Beyond merely acquiring everyday conversation, you’ll solidly acquire “the ability to listen to and understand lectures (academic listening)” and “the ability to read and comprehend academic materials (academic reading)” essential at universities and graduate schools, as well as “the ability to create logical reports (academic writing).”

Additionally, “learning aimed at passing JLPT N1″ essential for studying at Japanese higher education institutions is naturally included, along with advancement preparation for universities and vocational schools, EJU preparation, and graduate school preparation incorporated into the curriculum. Furthermore, through “project work” that polishes the ability to collaborate in Japanese through group work, you’ll comprehensively develop “skills to logically convey your own thoughts and deeply understand others’ thoughts” truly needed at advancement destinations. This is a course we can confidently recommend to those with high aspirations to become active as global human resources in the future.

The Japanese language level required at application is A1 or above (JLPT N5 level or above), making it possible to start from near-beginner status.

“Career Design Program” for Those Aiming for Employment in Japan

For those with clear goals of finding employment at Japanese companies or becoming active on the front lines of global society in the future, the “Career Design Program” is optimal. This course allows you to choose from three study periods—1 year (April/October enrollment), 1 year and 6 months (April/October enrollment), or 2 years (April/October enrollment)—according to your current Japanese language level and goals.

The greatest feature of this course is that you can comprehensively acquire skills essential for actually working in Japanese society, not just language learning. Through “Career Design” classes incorporated into the curriculum, you can thoroughly learn the basics of “Japanese-style job hunting,” which has high hurdles for foreigners, from how to write résumés and entry sheets to interview preparation. Additionally, by deepening understanding of Japanese culture and social systems through “Japanese Affairs” classes, you’ll develop practical “Japanese language proficiency” for building smooth interpersonal relationships with those around you and achieving self-realization in a multicultural society.

This course, which allows simultaneous acquisition of “advanced Japanese language ability applicable in business settings” and “understanding of Japanese social rules and values,” will be a very reassuring choice for international students wanting to succeed in job hunting in Japan.

The Japanese language level required at application is A1 or above (JLPT N5 level or above), making it possible to start from near-beginner status.

“Short-term Program” for Working Holiday and Short-term Stays

For those staying in Japan on a working holiday or holding short-stay visas, permanent resident visas, etc., who “want to intensively study Japanese in a short period,” the “Short-term Program” is recommended.

This course can be taken for periods of 3 months (45 class days) or 6 months (90 class days). The greatest advantage is that student visa application procedures are unnecessary, making procedures from application to enrollment very simple and smooth.

Enrollment periods are available four times a year—“January, April, June, and October”—allowing you to flexibly start learning according to your stay schedule. Through a placement test conducted after arrival in Japan, you’ll enter a class perfectly matching your level and receive full-scale Japanese language education in the same environment as long-term program international students.

This course is optimal not only for those who “want to study for just a short period first” but also allows you to apply for the long-term program and continue learning if you feel “I want to study more seriously” after taking the course. It’s perfect for those wanting to efficiently acquire practical Japanese language skills in a short period to enrich their life and activities in Japan.

The true value of a comprehensive curriculum and learning environment is reflected in actual “results.” At ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages, thorough career guidance utilizing abundant expertise accumulated over many years guides numerous international students to their desired paths every year.

High Advancement Achievement to National/Public and Elite Private Universities

For international students aiming to advance to Japanese universities or graduate schools, advancement achievement to target schools is one of the most important criteria for choosing a Japanese language school. This school conducts careful one-on-one career guidance, and many international students have achieved acceptance to prestigious universities and graduate schools to date.

Looking at data for graduates from 2009 to March 2024 (*cumulative results for Japanese Language Department and International Communication Department), the overwhelming acceptance achievement is clear at a glance.

The reason such high achievement can be continuously produced is the comprehensive support system that addresses each international student’s wishes individually. Regular advancement guidance sessions and advancement information sessions are held on campus, and detailed “acceptance reports” left by seniors can be freely viewed. An environment that powerfully supports everything needed for acceptance—from how to write statements of purpose to interview preparation—provides a very significant advantage for examinees.

JLPT/EJU Preparation and Higher Education Guidance

Qualification exam results are also noteworthy.

  • JLPT N1 passers: 175 students (cumulative results 2020–2023)
  • EJU Japanese subject 300+ scorers: 139 students (cumulative results 2020–2023, excluding composition)

Supporting these results is a comprehensive support system for JLPT preparation (on-demand, etc. for N1–N3) and EJU preparation (on-demand or in-person) in addition to regular classes. Advancement guidance is conducted one-on-one by faculty, with individual guidance toward target school acceptance from “considering majors” in May to “interview preparation” in September. The advancement consultation room where you can reference seniors’ detailed acceptance reports is also a reassuring ally for examinees.

Employment Offer Achievement at Japanese Companies

For students aiming for employment in Japan, careful employment guidance is conducted covering résumé and entry sheet correction, self-analysis, manner training, and interview preparation. There are employment offer achievements in diverse industries including hotels/tourism, IT, games, food service, and manufacturing, with some academic years achieving a 100% domestic employment offer rate. This is also due to the powerful career path established where, in addition to acquiring advanced language skills in the Japanese Language Department of ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages, students study specialized skills in business, IT, games, etc. at vocational schools in the same Yamaguchi Gakuen group (such as ECC College of Computer & Multimedia and ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages (Specialized Curriculum)) before aiming for employment in Japan. A system is in place where the school fully supports the dream of “working in Japan.”

6. Optimal Learning Environment and Reliable International Student Support

No matter how excellent the curriculum, you can’t demonstrate your true abilities if the environment you attend daily isn’t well-equipped. At ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages, no expense is spared in investing in the “learning environment” itself. From comprehensive facilities and equipment to school events and daily life support, a system is in place where international students can concentrate on Japanese language acquisition with peace of mind.

Campus Equipped with Top-Level Facilities

The ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages campus is a six-story building in a prime location approximately 10 minutes on foot from JR Osaka Station. A clean, well-ventilated entrance warmly welcomes international students. The entire building is equipped with Wi-Fi throughout, allowing free internet connection anywhere for comfortable completion of class preparation, review, and information gathering.

Classrooms where you attend daily classes are designed for small-group, level-based class organization. Always kept clean, each classroom is equipped with the latest air purifiers and the latest projectors. Using projectors enables dynamic lessons with video and slides, and you can learn real Japanese expressions while projecting actual TV news and newspaper articles on screen.

Time outside class is also fulfilling. The Language Center in the entrance has computers with constant internet connection available for free use. It’s utilized as a place to research points you didn’t understand in class at your own pace or deepen self-study of Japanese.

Particularly noteworthy is the existence of “ECC Japan Plaza.” A dedicated space for international students and Japanese students to interact and deeply learn about Japanese culture, featuring modern, stylish Japanese-style lighting with Katsushika Hokusai paintings as focal points. An environment where you can encounter “living Japanese” even outside class is naturally incorporated into campus.

The Academic Counseling Room is stocked with detailed success reports from senior students, and regular academic guidance sessions are also held here. The Student Lounge is fully equipped with vending machines and microwaves, providing a space where you can relax with your peers.

Fun Seasonal School Events

To enjoy a fulfilling life as an international student, it’s essential to have time to refresh and have fun with classmates, not just focus on daily studies. At ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages, there are plenty of school events throughout the year where both international and Japanese students can come together across nationalities and courses to have a great time.

For example, in the summer, the school hold the “Yukata Festival” and “Yo-yo Fishing Tournament,” where you can experience the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese festival. Additionally, the calendar is packed with exciting events like the “Speech Contest,” where students showcase their learning progress in front of a large audience, and the “Table Tennis Tournament,” featuring heated matches. From autumn to winter, various seasonal events color campus life, including “Halloween” with creative costumes, the “Ekiden Relay Race” where teams run together, and the “Global Festival” where students share dishes from their home countries.

Stepping out of the classroom to participate in various events not only creates lifelong memories but also provides an excellent opportunity to communicate naturally with Japanese students and international students from different backgrounds. The strong bonds formed through school events will make your days in Japan richer and more fruitful.

Multilingual Staff and Support for Housing and Part-time Jobs

For international students starting life in Japan for the first time, language barriers and daily life anxieties are inevitable. The Japanese Language Department at ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages provides a comprehensive support system for both academic studies and general daily life.

The presence of multilingual staff is particularly reassuring. The administrative office has staff who speak multiple languages, including English, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Thai, so you can receive support in your native language even in situations where it’s difficult to consult in Japanese. They provide kind and helpful assistance for all aspects of school life, including enrollment procedures, residency status, and daily life issues.

Regarding housing, the school can provide referrals to affiliated student dormitories and apartments. Since they introduce properties that balance safety and price, the effort and anxiety of searching for a room on your own are significantly reduced.

For foreigners looking for affordable rental properties in Tokyo or Osaka, please be sure to check out properties from “Xross House.” You can choose your ideal home from a variety of options, including furnished share houses and studio apartments!

For more detailed information about Xross House, please see the article below. If you need support when renting a Xross House property, please feel free to contact us.

Additionally, the school provides information on part-time jobs to support the financial independence of international students. Guidance is provided on how to find jobs within the scope of a student visa and important points to note, helping students find a way to balance academics and work while enriching their life in Japan. Using Japanese in a real work environment also contributes greatly to improving language skills by providing communication experiences that cannot be gained in a classroom.

Since obtaining a student visa involves screening by the Immigration Services Agency and takes several months, you need to start the procedures more than six months before enrollment. Depending on the application deadline for the Immigration Services Agency, the application period may be even earlier, so we recommend contacting Japan Education Career (JEC) as soon as possible.

Short-term Course (3-month, 6-month courses)

Short-term courses have four enrollment periods per year (January, April, June, and October). The procedure is simple because a student visa application is not required, but since the recruitment periods may vary, please check with JEC in advance to see if you can take the course during your desired period.

Admission Eligibility

The main qualifications and conditions required for application are as follows:

Long-term Course (1-year, 1.5-year, 2-year courses)

  • Must have completed (or be expected to complete) 12 years or more of school education in a foreign country, or have completed a secondary education course that qualifies for university entrance.

  • Must be able to lead an independent life as an international student after understanding the educational content of this school.
  • Must be able to promise not to smoke within the campus and in the school’s neighborhood.
  • Note that an interview may be conducted depending on nationality and background.

Short-term Course (3-month, 6-month courses)

Since visa application is not required, the conditions are relatively simple: “Must be 18 years of age or older in principle (enrollment may be possible even if this does not apply, provided the Department Head approves).”

9. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

faq
Q
What countries do the students come from?
A

Students from over 42 countries worldwide are enrolled, including Asian countries such as China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Indonesia, as well as Canada, the USA, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Italy, the UK, France, Switzerland, Sweden, and Denmark.

Q
What is the class schedule like?
A

Classes are held from Monday to Friday, with 5 periods a day. The class hours are 9:00 AM to 1:10 PM for the morning class and 1:40 PM to 5:50 PM for the afternoon class. Which class you will be in is determined by your Japanese language proficiency.

Q
How much does it cost to live in Japan?
A

For a lifestyle centered on studying, the estimate is about 80,000 to 100,000 yen per month. The breakdown is 30,000 to 50,000 yen for housing, 25,000 to 35,000 yen for food, and miscellaneous expenses such as transportation and social activities. Note that a security deposit for housing will be required separately upon arrival in Japan.

Q
I am worried about what happens if I get sick or injured.
A

There are many hospitals near the school and dormitories, including some where English, Chinese, and Korean are spoken. The “Enrollment Guide” (available in various languages) distributed at the orientation upon admission contains information on major nearby hospitals, and the administrative office also provides guidance. Regarding medical expenses, all students on a student visa must join the National Health Insurance (the enrollment method will be explained after arrival), which covers 70% of medical costs, meaning you only pay 30% out of pocket. For those on a temporary visitor visa, we recommend joining overseas travel insurance in your home country before coming to Japan, as you cannot join the National Health Insurance.

Q
How much savings balance is required to study abroad?
A

The required bank balance is roughly the “tuition + living expenses for the study period” minus the “difference between the financial sponsor’s income and expenditures.” For example, if you study for 2 years, the total of approximately 3.62 million yen (approx. 1.7 million yen for tuition + approx. 1.92 million yen for living expenses at 80,000 yen x 24 months) minus the financial sponsor’s annual surplus income would be the required bank balance. It is safer not to include part-time job income in the calculation. Also, if you plan to go on to university after graduation, you need to consider those tuition and living expenses as well.

Q
How much income does the financial sponsor need to have in order to study abroad?
A

The required income amount cannot be generalized as living standards vary by country, but for example, in China, an annual income of 100,000 yuan (approx. 1.5 million yen) or more is considered one guideline. The balance of the financial sponsor’s bank balance, income, and expenditures will be comprehensively reviewed. Please contact JEC for detailed conditions.

Q
What level of academic background is required?
A

Since ECC Kokusai College of Foreign Languages is a vocational college (higher education institution), the target for admission is those who have graduated from high school or higher (in principle, completed 12 years of education). However, for those from countries with an education system of less than 12 years or if there is a valid reason, admission may be granted, so please contact us first.

Q
Is there an age limit?
A

In principle, those 18 years of age or older are eligible for admission. However, there are exceptions for those under 18 who have completed secondary education, so please contact us. There is no upper age limit, but for those who have been out of school for more than 5 years, the reason for study, their background after graduation, and the validity of their reason for wanting to study in Japan will be more strictly reviewed.

Q
Can I enroll even if I cannot speak Japanese at all?
A

No, in principle, for long-term courses, you need Japanese language proficiency equivalent to JLPT N5 or higher at the time of application, or a study history of 150 hours or more. This is also a screening requirement for a student visa and is essential to prevent life troubles after coming to Japan. Let’s start basic learning in your home country first.

ABK COLLEGE Complete Guide: Tokyo’s Top Japanese Language School for University & Career Success Since 1957 https://blog.jpeducareer.com/en/abk-college-japanese-language-school-complete-guide/ Thu, 19 Feb 2026 14:35:44 +0000 https://jpeducareer.com/abk-college-japanese-language-school-guide/ ※この記事内にはプロモーションが含まれています。

If you’ve decided to study in Japan, the very first — and most important — step is choosing the right Japanese language school. Any school can teach you Japanese, but if your goal is to advance to a Japanese university or build a career in Japan, you need a school that will fully support those ambitions.

The school we’re introducing today, ABK COLLEGE, is located in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, and has been nurturing international students since 1957. With a storied history and a cutting-edge digital learning environment, it stands out as one of Japan’s most compelling language schools for serious students.

This article explains ABK COLLEGE’s key strengths, course structure, tuition fees, housing options, and application procedures — all explained as clearly as possible for international students considering study in Japan.

  • The key strengths and features of ABK COLLEGE
  • Japanese language courses and tuition fees
  • Student housing and living environment
  • Admission requirements and application process

Why ABK COLLEGE? — 7 Key Strengths

So why do so many international students choose ABK COLLEGE? Here’s an in-depth look at seven compelling reasons.

1. Tradition and Trust Since 1957

ABK COLLEGE was founded by the Asian Students Cultural Association, a Public Interest Incorporated Foundation officially recognized by Japan’s Cabinet Office.

Since its establishment in 1957, the institution has supported more than 10,000 international students. Graduates are now active across the globe. Over six decades, ABK has developed:

  • Deep expertise in academic and life support for foreign students
  • A strong global alumni network
  • A reputation trusted across generations

Some families even send their children to ABK after having studied there themselves—a testament to the school’s consistent quality.

Being established by a government-recognized foundation also provides credibility during student visa applications and when applying to universities in Japan.

2. A Modern Campus Built for Focused Learning

When people hear “long-established school,” they often picture an old, rundown building. ABK COLLEGE defies that expectation. The campus was completed in 2013 and opened in 2014, featuring a sleek modern design that balances aesthetics with everyday usability — a genuinely comfortable learning environment.

One area of particular focus is safety. Japan is earthquake-prone, and the structural integrity of a building matters not only to students but to their families back home. ABK COLLEGE’s building incorporates the latest earthquake-resistant construction standards, designed to protect students even in the event of a disaster.

The learning environment extends beyond the classroom. ABK COLLEGE is located in Bunkyo Ward — home to the University of Tokyo and numerous other universities and research institutions. This quiet, intellectually vibrant neighborhood is a world away from the nonstop buzz of Shibuya or Shinjuku. With green spaces like Rikugien Garden nearby, it’s an ideal setting for students who want to stay focused on their studies.

The campus is just a 3-minute walk from Sengoku Station on the Toei Mita Line, giving students easy access to major Tokyo hubs like Ikebukuro and Otemachi. Students enjoy the best of both worlds: a calm, academic atmosphere and convenient city access.

3. A Fully Digital Learning Environment

While many Japanese language schools still rely primarily on paper and pencil, ABK COLLEGE has embraced Google Workspace for Education, actively digitizing (DX-ing) its learning environment. The goal is smarter, more efficient studying — and it starts from day one.

Every enrolled student receives a dedicated 「@abk.ac.jp」 Google account. Class materials, assignments, and schedules are all managed in the cloud, accessible from any smartphone, tablet, or computer. This means you can study on your commute or squeeze in practice during any spare moment.

Students can also check their own attendance records, grades, and assignment submission status directly from their smartphones. Instead of just “studying without direction,” you can track your own data, identify weak areas, and study efficiently.

For university guidance, ABK uses an AI-powered tool called “Recommended Exam Go for iPad.” Based on your academic history and individual performance, the AI suggests schools with the highest probability of acceptance — a data-driven approach to choosing your path.

ABK’s digital learning environment doesn’t just improve your Japanese — it also gives you practical IT skills that will serve you well at Japanese universities and in Japanese workplaces. It’s a forward-thinking setup designed with your future in mind.

4. Proven University Placement Success

ABK COLLEGE has built a strong track record of helping students advance to top universities and graduate schools. It’s now widely recognized as one of Japan’s “best schools for university placement.” Students can aim for graduate programs, national and public universities, private universities, arts colleges, and vocational schools — with dedicated support for each path.

One of ABK’s most powerful advantages is its designated school recommendation system (指定校推薦). Under this system, universities and vocational schools identify ABK COLLEGE as a trusted institution, giving its students access to special application quotas. In the 2023 academic year alone, 22 notable universities — including Meiji University, Musashino University, and Daito Bunka University — and 40 leading vocational schools (including Nihon Electronics College) participated in this system.

In the general entrance exam process, international students must score highly on the Examination for Japanese University Admission (EJU), and competition is intense. By contrast, the designated school recommendation route focuses primarily on document screening and interviews, allowing students to approach the process with greater calm and clarity.

Depending on the school, students may also be eligible for tuition reductions or entrance fee waivers — easing the financial burden of pursuing higher education in Japan.

5. Comprehensive Job Placement Support

For students who dream of building a career in Japan, ABK COLLEGE is an equally strong partner. Japanese job-hunting culture is famously complex — with its own unique rules, etiquette, and seasonal rhythms — and it can be overwhelming for international students navigating it alone.

ABK offers a dedicated “Career Track” (就職コース) with professional-level career support, including:

  • Visa Expertise: In addition to the standard “Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services” (技術・人文知識・国際業務) visa, ABK provides end-to-end support for the increasingly sought-after “Specified Skilled Worker” (特定技能) visa — from exam preparation to company matching after certification.
  • Direct Company Access: ABK invites companies that actively recruit international talent — including Daido Co., Ltd. and Tokiwa Koutai Co., Ltd. — directly to campus for information sessions and interviews. Meeting HR representatives in a familiar environment reduces anxiety and lets students perform at their best.
  • Digital Job Search: Leveraging Google Classroom, ABK distributes job listings and practical job-hunting tips directly to students. Combined with resume feedback and thorough interview practice, this system has helped students secure 50+ job offers per year.

6. ABK’s Three-Pillar Japanese Education: The “ACE” Approach

ABK COLLEGE’s Japanese language education is built on decades of experience and organized around three core pillars:

Academic — Focused on university and graduate school preparation: entrance exam coaching, interview practice, JLPT and EJU test prep. Emphasis on practical academic skills including discussion, presentation, and academic writing.

Culture — Deep cultural immersion through drama- and film-based lessons, and general education classes on Japanese history, economics, and politics. Students gain a nuanced understanding of Japanese society that goes beyond textbook language.

Experience — Hands-on learning through project work, conversation practice with Japanese volunteer partners, and community exchange events. A rich elective curriculum rounds out practical communication skills.

Through in-house developed materials and diverse activities, ABK supports students from certification exam preparation all the way to a genuine appreciation of Japanese culture.

7. Selected as a Host Institution for MEXT Government-Sponsored Scholarships

Starting in April 2026, ABK COLLEGE has been designated as a Japanese language education institution under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Government Scholarship (国費外国人留学生) program. Top international students recommended by their home country’s Japanese embassy will study Japanese at ABK COLLEGE before entering Japanese universities. This designation reflects MEXT’s formal recognition of ABK’s exceptional standards in Japanese language instruction and student guidance.

Course Overview

Every student comes to Japan with different goals, backgrounds, and timelines. ABK COLLEGE offers a thoughtfully structured range of courses to match your unique situation — whether you want to immerse yourself in Japanese for two full years or squeeze intensive practice into a single month.

Courses fall into two broad categories: the Regular Course for students seeking a thorough, long-term language education; and the Short-Term Course for those with limited time who want an intensive experience.

Regular Courses — The Main Path to Your Goals

These are the flagship programs for students who need a student visa and plan to study Japanese intensively over 6 months to 2 years in pursuit of university admission or employment in Japan.

① General Course (Prep. Course 1) — University, Employment, Life Skills, Certifications

This is the most standard course. Students build their Japanese proficiency step by step — from the basics through to advanced skills — in preparation for university, graduate school, or employment in Japan.

EnrollmentCourseDurationTotal HoursBest For
April1-Year course1 year860 hrsStudents with some Japanese foundation who want to move fast
April2-Years course2 year1,720 hrsStudents starting from scratch who want the highest level of fluency
July1-Year and 9 Mo course1 yr 9 mo1,470 hrsA well-balanced option with ample study time and a favorable arrival season
October1-Year and 6 mo course1 yr 6 mo1,290 hrsStandard course aligned with Japanese university autumn entry or spring admissions
January1-Year and 3 Mo course1 yr 3 mo1,040 hrsIntensive course for students with existing foundation (N3 level or above recommended)

② Academic Foundation Course (Prep. Course 2) — University Entrance Qualification Supplement

This is one of ABK COLLEGE’s most distinctive and valuable offerings. In some countries, secondary education totals only 10 or 11 years. This can disqualify students from applying to Japanese universities, which require 12 years of formal schooling. ABK’s Ministry of Education-approved Academic Foundation Course (準備教育課程) allows eligible students to fulfill the missing education requirements and gain qualification to apply to Japanese universities.

  • Curriculum: Japanese language instruction plus foundation subjects required for university study (English, math, social studies, science, etc.), with separate tracks for humanities and science students.
  • Start Dates: April (1-year course) or October (1.5-year course), adaptable to individual academic backgrounds and application timelines.

October1-Year and 6 mo course1 yr 6 mo1,290 hrs (Japanese) + 120 hrs (Foundation Subjects) / 1.5 yrsBeginner to upper-intermediate Japanese learners

Short-Term Course — Immerse Yourself in Japan

Designed for students on a tourist visa or working holiday visa, staying 1 to 3 months. This course is perfect for those who want to experience the school atmosphere before committing to a long-term program, or who want to make the most of a break by studying Japanese intensively.

Short-term students join regular classes alongside long-term students — meaning you get a real, authentic Japanese lesson experience.

Tuition & Fees

Financial planning is essential for a successful study abroad experience. One important advantage of ABK COLLEGE is that, as a school corporation (学校法人), tuition is exempt from consumption tax. Compared to language schools operated by private companies, this difference can translate to savings of tens of thousands of yen.

Student Housing — Living Comfortably in Tokyo

School Dormitories — Convenience and Security

For those who feel anxious about living alone for the first time, or worried about managing their own meals every day, student dormitories are a great option to consider.

  • ABK International Student Dormitory: Located right next to the campus — a literal 0-minute commute. Make the most of your mornings with direct access to classrooms and the school library. Private single rooms protect your personal space, while shared common areas let you connect with fellow students.
  • Dormy Series (Kyoritsu Maintenance): Meal-included student dormitories managed by a professional operator, providing breakfast and dinner daily. Live-in dorm parents are on hand for any lifestyle concerns — ideal for students who prioritize a safe, supported environment.
  • HAKUSAN HOUSE: A stylishly designed residence with a spacious shared lounge, kitchen, and theater room — a hub for daily international exchange. No key money, no security deposit, no guarantor required, and all furniture and appliances are provided. Move in with just a suitcase.

Share Houses — For Students Who Love Connecting with the World

If you want to experience communal living with people from different countries, a share house is a fantastic choice. Daily life naturally creates opportunities for cross-cultural conversation and friendship.

For international students looking for affordable rental housing in Tokyo or Osaka, check out the housing options provided by “Xross House.” You can choose rental housing that suits you from various options including share houses and single-person apartments equipped with furniture, appliances, and Wi-Fi.

For more information about Xross House, please refer to the article below. If you need any assistance with renting from Xross House, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Student Apartments — For Students Who Value Privacy

If you prefer your own space, the school can connect you with affiliated real estate agents who specialize in helping international students find apartments. Available properties often feature foreign-friendly conditions such as no guarantor required, furnished units, and English-speaking support — making the process significantly smoother.

Voices from ABK Graduates

The real proof of ABK COLLEGE’s value lies in what its graduates have gone on to achieve. Here’s what some of them have to say.

Students Who Achieved Their University Dreams

Ms. Xin Tian — Enrolled at Daito Bunka University, Faculty of Literature

She overcame the anxiety of the general entrance exam process through ABK’s designated school recommendation system.

As a prospective student, my biggest fear was failing to gain admission to a Japanese university and having to return home empty-handed. The general exam demands high EJU scores and intense competition. With the designated school recommendation, the probability of acceptance is much higher, and I was able to go through the process with far less stress.

Mr. Tan — Enrolled at Hiroshima University of Economics, Faculty of Media Business

He made the most of the financial benefits that come with the designated school recommendation.

Using the designated school recommendation didn’t just improve my chances of acceptance — it also reduced my first-year tuition by 80%. It eased both the mental pressure of exam season and the financial burden. I’m really glad I chose this path.

Students Who Built Careers in Japan

Ms. Hazuki — Employed at a Ryokan in Hakone

She describes the moment classroom Japanese transformed into real-world impact for her guests.

I now work at a traditional Japanese inn in Hakone, one of Japan’s most celebrated hot spring destinations. My main role is front desk service. Providing polite, professional service in Japanese isn’t easy, but the formal speech (keigo) I studied so carefully has truly paid off. When guests say, “Thank you for a wonderful stay,” I feel genuinely proud and know I made the right choice.

Mr. Pai — Employed in the Manufacturing Sector

For him, it was personal connections that led to his job offer.

What motivated me to pursue employment in Japan was attending an ABK career event, where I heard directly from the company president and a senior employee. That senior employee happened to be someone I knew from my university days in Thailand, which made me feel immediately at ease. It all started with that connection.

How to Apply — Enrollment Procedures

Your journey to Japan starts with a smooth, well-prepared application. ABK COLLEGE provides up-to-date guidance on all procedures, including immigration paperwork. Even first-time applicants can move through the process with confidence by following the step-by-step guidance provided.

Eligibility Requirements

Before applying, let’s go over the eligibility requirements. ABK COLLEGE has established several criteria regarding academic background, age, and Japanese language proficiency.

  1. Academic Requirement: You must have completed (or be on track to complete) 12 or more years of formal schooling in your home country, or have completed secondary education (e.g., Form 5 or equivalent).
  2. Age Requirement: Applicants targeting universities or vocational schools must be at least 18 years old at the time of enrollment; those targeting graduate programs must be at least 22 years old.
  3. Japanese Language Requirement: At the time of application, you must hold a passing score on JLPT N5 or an equivalent Japanese language qualification (J-TEST, NAT-TEST, etc.), OR provide documentation of 150 or more hours of Japanese language study.

Enrollment Capacity

Each course has a limited number of spots available. Popular intake periods such as April and October tend to fill up early. Additionally, some courses — such as the January intake — may not be offered at all if capacity has already been reached. We recommend checking the latest availability directly with Japan Education Career (JEC).

Application Deadlines

Application periods are strictly enforced. Even a single day’s delay may result in your application not being accepted. Plan well ahead.

  • April Entry (1-Year / 2-Year Course): September 1 – October 31 of the prior year
  • July Entry (1-Year-9-Month Course): December 10 of the prior year – February 10 of the application year
  • October Entry (1-Year-6-Month Course): March 1 – April 28 of the application year
  • January Entry (1-Year-3-Month Course): June 10 – August 10 of the prior year

Required Application Documents

All documents must generally be issued within 3 months of submission. Documents in languages other than Japanese or English must be accompanied by a translation.

Applicant Personal Document

  • Application Form (school-designated form, provided by JEC)
  • Statement of Enrollment Purpose (school-designated form, provided by JEC)
  • Study Abroad Consent Form and Questionnaire (school-designated form, provided by JEC)
  • Final academic diploma or graduation certificate (originals or notarized copies only)
  • Certificate of Expected Graduation (for currently enrolled students only)
  • Academic transcripts (all years of high school or university)

  • 4 passport-sized photos (3cm × 4cm, taken within the last 3 months)
  • Medical Certificate (school-designated form, provided by JEC)
  • JLPT score report or equivalent, or Certificate of Japanese Study (150+ hours)

Financial Support Documentation

You must provide documents proving who will pay for your living expenses and tuition in Japan, and how. Choose the category that applies to you:

Option A: Family or relatives abroad (most common)

This is the most common pattern (for example, where a parent in your home country acts as your financial sponsor).

  • Financial Support Declaration (school-designated form, provided by JEC; must be hand-signed by the sponsor)
  • Bank balance certificate (bank-issued, bearing the signature and seal of a bank officer; note: bank statements covering the past 1–3 years may also be required to demonstrate how the funds were accumulated)
  • Employment certificate (issued by the employer for company employees; for business owners, a certificate of company registration or business license)
  • Annual income certificate (a tax certificate stating the sponsor’s annual income, or an equivalent certificate issued by their employer)
  • Family relationship certificate (e.g., family registry or birth certificate — any document that proves the relationship between the sponsor and the applicant)
Option B: Family or relatives in Japan

This applies when a relative residing in Japan becomes the financial sponsor.

  • Annual income certificate (Tax declaration ceritificate(課税証明書) issued by ward or city office (showing sponsor’s annual income.)
  • Family relationship certificate (e.g., family registry or birth certificate — any document that proves the relationship between the sponsor and the applicant)
  • Residence certificate (住民票, listing all members of the household)
Option C: Self-funded (own savings)

This applies to those who have prior work experience and plan to fund their own studies abroad using their personal savings.

  • Financial Support Declaration (school-designated form, provided by JEC; must be hand-signed by the sponsor)
  • Bank balance certificate (in the applicant’s own name; bank statements may be required to demonstrate how the funds were accumulated)
  • Employment certificate (or resignation certificate)
  • Annual income certificate (a tax certificate stating the applicant’s own annual income, or an equivalent certificate issued by their employer)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q
Can I enroll if I don’t speak any Japanese yet?
A

No. As a general rule, applicants are required to have Japanese language proficiency equivalent to JLPT N5 or above, or a study history of at least 150 hours. This is also a requirement for the student visa screening process, and is essential for preventing difficulties in daily life after arriving in Japan. We recommend starting your foundational Japanese studies in your home country first.

Q
Can I pay tuition in installments?
A

Yes. Tuition can be paid in semi-annual installments of ¥320,000 per period. For the 1-year-3-month and 1-year-9-month courses, the first payment covers 9 months of tuition.

Q
Am I allowed to work part-time while studying?
A

Yes. By applying for a “Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted under the Status of Residence” (資格外活動許可) at the airport or another designated location upon arrival in Japan, students are permitted to work part-time for up to 28 hours per week (and up to 8 hours per day during long school breaks). Many ABK students work at convenience stores or restaurants, covering part of their living expenses while picking up practical, real-world Japanese at the same time.

Q
Does the dormitory accommodate food allergies?
A

Allergy accommodation policies vary by dormitory. Please be sure to discuss the details at the time of application.

Japanese Language School in Sapporo & Fukuoka: Complete Meiji Academy Guide 2026 https://blog.jpeducareer.com/en/meiji-academy-japanese-school-guide/ Wed, 10 Dec 2025 13:04:13 +0000 https://jpeducareer.com/?p=4506 Learning Japanese opens doors to one of the world’s most fascinating cultures, but choosing the right language school is the most critical step in a student’s journey. Since 2014, Meiji Academy has established itself as Japan’s pioneer in Communicative Japanese education (an approach prioritizing real conversation over textbook memorization).

This comprehensive guide covers everything students need to know about Meiji Academy, including its unique learning environment, curriculum, pricing, accommodation, and global recognition.

1. Why Choose Meiji Academy?

Meiji Academy offers many unique features that set it apart from traditional language schools.

🗣️The Communicative Japanese Method

Many language programs prioritize passing standardized tests (like the JLPT) and academic reading, leaving students hesitant and unprepared for daily interactions. Meiji Academy reverses this approach:

  • Balance of Theory and Application: The curriculum is split equally between fundamental grammar structure and immediate, real-world application.
  • Outcome: Students graduate with the confidence to navigate restaurants, handle local errands, establish friendships, and truly understand Japanese cultural customs (not just pass a test).

🎯Unmatched Personalized Attention

To ensure rapid progress, Meiji Academy maintains the most intimate learning environment among all accredited Japanese language schools.

  • Class Size Advantage: Classes typically host only 3 to 6 students (significantly smaller than the standard 15–20).
  • Accelerated Learning: This small ratio maximizes individual speaking time (5–10 times more practice) and guarantees personalized feedback from instructors.
  • The Private Promise: During slower enrollment periods, if a class shrinks to only 1 or 2 students, the student’s program is upgraded to 15 private or semi-private lessons per week at no additional charge.

🧩Maximum Flexibility for Your Schedule

Meiji Academy offers unparalleled adaptability to fit any student’s timeline:

  • Rolling Enrollment: Students can start studies on any Monday throughout the year.
  • Custom Duration: Programs range from short-term adventures (1 week) to extended immersion (2 years).
  • Accessibility: The school welcomes students of all proficiency levels, from absolute beginners onward.

Guidance for Newcomers: Beginners enroll on the first Monday of each month and receive essential pre-study materials to master the fundamentals of Hiragana and Katakana within 7–10 days.

🤝 A Nurturing Community: A Cultural Home

The heart of Meiji Academy is its role as a social and cultural liaison connecting international learners with local Japanese residents.

  • Social Immersion: Students have opportunities to meet and greet local Japanese students through social projects and field trips, fostering genuine cross-cultural understanding.
  • Civic Participation: Students can contribute positively to Japanese society by participating in various optional volunteer activities and social projects organized throughout the year.

🎉 Experiential Learning: Fun Cultural Immersion

The school believes that enjoyment is the catalyst for fluency. Its calendar is packed with unique recreational, social, and cultural events designed to bring the language to life outside the classroom.

  • Annual Highlights: Students celebrate iconic events like Summer Fireworks (Hanabi) and Cherry Blossom Viewing (Hanami).
  • Hands-on Arts: Participants engage in traditional disciplines such as the Tea Ceremony (Sadō), Japanese Calligraphy, Taiko Drumming, and Martial Arts like Katana Sword Training (Iaido).
  • Style: Students can experience the grace of wearing a traditional Kimono.

🏅 Globally Recognized Excellence

Meiji Academy’s quality speaks for itself through its official recognition and partnerships. The school is acknowledged by leading government and educational bodies worldwide, ensuring that credits and educational leave are universally accepted.

  • Japanese Government: Accredited by the Ministry of Education (MEXT).
  • European Recognition: The only Japanese school approved by all German Federal States for Bildungsurlaub and recognized by the Austrian Government for Weiterbildungszeit/Bildungskarenz (paid educational leave). Fully accredited for Swedish CSN student financial support.
  • International Partnerships: The school is a trusted partner of over 90 universities and high schools and it is the first Japanese language to become a member of NAFSA (Association of International Educators) as Japanese language school.

The school has also received several awards throughout the years.

2. Choose Your Campus: Sapporo or Fukuoka

Meiji Academy operates in two distinct locations, providing students with the chance to experience diverse regional cultures. Many students choose to combine both locations during their study term.

Out of all the things I did during my study-abroad with Meiji, my favourite part was learning Japanese directly while speaking with my host family. They really shaped my experience to be as great as it was by opening their home to me and making me feel like a family member.

Japanese Language Schools 2026: Complete Guide from Application to Enrollment https://blog.jpeducareer.com/en/japanese-language-schools-complete-guide-from-application-to-enrollment/ Sat, 29 Jan 2022 06:48:14 +0000 https://jpeducareer.com/japanese-language-schools-a-complete-guide-from-application-to-enrollment/ Are you determined to study in Japan to improve your Japanese language skills, pursue higher education at a Japanese university, or find employment in Japan? Many people considering enrollment in Japanese language schools don’t have detailed information about these institutions and how to navigate the application process.

This comprehensive guide will explain key factors in choosing the right Japanese language school, costs involved, and the complete application process. Use this information to perfectly launch your study abroad experience in Japan.

Basic Eligibility Requirements

Before diving into school selection, ensure you meet these fundamental requirements:

  • Completion of 12 years of formal education
  • Minimum age of 18 years

Choosing the Optimal Language School

Selecting the right Japanese language school is one of the most crucial processes as the starting point for your international education and career journey. Choosing the school that best fits your needs will be an extremely effective step both educationally and professionally.

Location and Accessibility Considerations

Choosing a Japanese language school in cities outside Tokyo can help reduce living costs. However, if you plan to advance to universities in Tokyo or seek employment there, when considering transportation costs and accommodation expenses in Tokyo, the total cost difference may not be significantly large.

It’s best to choose a school located near the area where you plan to live or work after graduating from Japanese language school.

School Selection Based on Your Goals

Japanese language schools vary in their founding purposes and service offerings. Be sure to verify the following points before applying:

For University-Bound Students:

  • Availability of EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission) preparation courses
  • Provision of free consultation services regarding university entrance exams

For Job Seekers:

  • Availability of JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) preparation courses
  • Career support programs and job placement assistance
  • Industry connections and internship opportunities
  • Support for finding housing or part-time work

Student Demographics from Your Home Country

The visa application process varies by country, so if students from your home country have previously attended the language school, enrollment procedures can be significantly simplified. This also provides advantages in terms of cultural and religious considerations.

How to Find the Right Japanese Language School

  • Use the Association for the Promotion of Japanese Language Education‘s search engine to find Japanese language schools that match your desired criteria
  • Consult with the Japan Education Career team to obtain information about partner language schools (free support for applications and visa procedures for partner schools)
Advice

Since the application process requires significant time and effort, receiving free support from Japan Education Career’s specialized team can streamline your procedures efficiently.

For details about our partner Japanese language schools, please refer to the article below👇

Determining Course Duration

Courses Under 6 Months: No Student Visa Required

Japan allows visa-free entry for 90 days for citizens of certain countries. Two visa-free entries (totaling 180 days) are possible within a year, but you must exit the country once after 90 days.

Courses 6 Months to 2 Years: Student Visa Required

Language courses exceeding 6 months require a student visa. The Japanese language school you’re applying to will support the necessary procedures for visa application.

Your Japanese language school will apply for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from the Immigration Bureau and send it to you. You’ll need this document to apply for your student visa in your home country. Keep in mind that you must apply for your visa before coming to Japan—you cannot come on a tourist visa and then change it to a student visa after arrival.

Choosing Your Enrollment Period

In Japan, enrollment in Japanese language schools with student visas occurs four times per year (January, April, July, October). Since school applications and visa procedures require considerable time, you need to contact your intended Japanese language school at least 6 months before your desired enrollment period.

Cost Breakdown

Costs vary by school, but expect annual expenses of 700,000 JPY-1,000,000 JPY (living expenses and accommodation costs are separate).

Expense CategoryAmount
Application Fee30,000 JPY
Enrollment Fee70,000 JPY
